avocado-829092_1280The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics declared March as the official National Nutrition Month. The goal of National Nutrition Month is to educate as many people as possible about the benefits of maintaining a consistent and healthy diet. National Nutrition Month also encourages people to exercise daily as it is proven to not just improve your physical health, but your emotional health and overall quality of life.

By this point in the year, most have abandoned their New Years resolutions. National Nutrition Month therefore, serves as a fresh start for everyone who fits this description. For those that have persevered, National Nutrition Month helps provide them with an extra kick of motivation to keep going.

Here are 4 ways for you to celebrate National Nutrition Month:

  1. Exercise Every Day: To achieve a more healthy lifestyle, improving your diet is just one step. You also need to consistently exercise. This doesn’t necessarily have to entail going to the gym every day. For many of us, going to the gym feels like a chore. If you feel the same way, try an activity that you enjoy like pick-up basketball, yoga, hiking or riding your bike. You shouldn’t have to dread working out, it should be something that you enjoy!
  2. Hydate Frequently: Drinking plenty of water helps speed up your metabolism, as well as alleviate muscle soreness, headaches and cramps. While different publications will suggest varying recommended daily water intake, aim for about 1 gallon of water each day.
  3. Improve Your Diet: In order to improve your diet, you don’t need to start by making any drastic changes. Next time you go grocery shopping, try to stick to the outside perimeter of the store where you will find everything you need, such as fresh vegetables, fruit, produce and meats. Then, try cooking for yourself instead of getting takeout or eating frozen or premade meals.
  4. Be Mindful of Your Eating Habits: While it’s okay to occasionally cheat and enjoy an ice cream cone or bag of popcorn at the movies, make sure you refrain from eating late at night as much as possible. This contributes to rapid weight gain and is proven to be an extremely detrimental habit. Also, make sure you’re not overeating or undereating or skipping breakfast. Experts say breakfast is the most important meal of the day for a variety of reasons, namely, it kick starts your metabolism and provides you with enough energy to be successful at school or at your place of employment.
